About

Stubby came to the Refuge in May of 1999. He originally came from a wildlife facility in Idaho called “Ligertown.” This place had lions, tigers, ligers (crosses between lion and tigers), and wolves and wolfdogs. Sometime in 1995 there was a major escape, and there were dozens of these animals running loose all over the countryside. Some were shot. Some were recovered, and some were never found. All of the big cats that were recovered were transported to a place in southern California called the “Wildlife Waystation.” This is an excellent sanctuary for a variety of wildlife. It has a substantial operating budget funded in part by a number of Hollywood celebrities. These cats were the fortunate ones. We were told that approximately 35 of the wolves and wolfdogs were recovered, but they no place to go
