Obama Takes Action to Restore Strength to Endangered Species Act
(March 3, 2009) The Endangered Species Act, our country's most important wildlife law has survived the despicable assault of the Bush administration. President Obama has directed all federal agencies to once again consult with independent scientists at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to determine if their actions might harm threatened and endangered species. This action will limit the damage caused by the last-minute Endangered Species Act regulations put in place by the Bush Administration in December 2008. Read the entire article.
Help Us Stop the Aerial Slaughter of Wildlife in Alaska (March 2009)
As I'm sure you know the citizen's initiative in Alaska to halt the aerial shooting of wolves failed. It was due to politics and money. All the other wildlife advocacy groups (Defenders, NWF, NRDC, Center for Biological Diversity, etc) are lobbying to get the Protect America'a Wildlife Act (H.R. 3663) reintroduced into the new legislature. I personally wrote Congressman George Miller (D-Calif.) asking him to join with all those who previously cosponsored HR3663 with him to reintroduce it again. Read the rest of the article.
New Secretary of Interior Shows His True Colors (March 2009)

March 6, 2009

President Obama's new Secretary of Interior revealed his true colors very early in his tenure. Newly appointed Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced that he would follow the discredited path of the Bush Administration and remove the wolves in the Northern Rockies and Greater Yellowstone regions from the Endangered Species list. He was highly touted as being very amiable and a consensus builder. But his second act since being in office turns out to be very polarizing. This delisting paves the way for almost 1000 wolves to be killed under the deadly state management plans of Idaho and Montana. more...

The Future in Wolf & WolfDog Care
The purpose of the U.S. Wolf Refuge is to provide the animals in our care with the highest quality of life that we can. One of the most important things in doing this is to provide them with a safe, secure, and comfortable place to live. It is our responsibility to give them a quality of life that is equal to that of their natural way of life. Since these animals cannot be returned to their natural environment, we must give them the freedom to be what they truly are. Giving them this freedom in a captive situation is a delicate and difficult dichotomy. more...
Mexican Wolf Update: (3/09)
A total of 52 Mexican wolves were counted in the wild in Arizona and New Mexico at the end of 2008, according to the annual survey conducted by the Interagency Field Team for wolf reintroduction. There were also 52 Mexican wolves recorded in the 2007 survey. Surveys are conducted in January of each year. Pups born in the summer must survive to December 31 to be counted as part of the Mexican wolf population. Fixed-wing aircraft and functional radio-telemetry were used to confirm five wolf packs on New Mexico’s Gila National Forest, five packs on the Apache-Sitgraves National Forest and Fort Apache Indian Reservation in Arizona, and six lone wolves – two in Arizona and four in New Mexico. The survey indicated that there were only two pairs that met the federal definition of breeding pairs at year’s end.  more...
The Killing in Alaska Continues
For those who don’t know about this, the former Governor of Alaska Frank Murkowski reinstated a program where he authorized the Alaska Dept of Fish & Game to issue permits to private citizens to hunt and shoot wolves from planes and helicopters and/or chase them in planes and helicopters until they are exhausted, and then land and shoot them point blank. This included all wolves, including puppies and pregnant mothers. more...
