2010 Tax-Deductible Donations

We understand that in this difficult economy it is not easy to donate to organizations such as ours. Family most definitely comes first. However, if the opportunity arises, please think of us when making a Tax-Deductible donation this year. Our "pack" always appreciates the help from our supporters. It's easy to visit our website and click onto "Paypal".

“KODA” Makes His Final Journey

(Written 06-05-10)

Koda's WalkIn our May 2009 e-newsletter we included an email from a lady named Michelle about her wolf-dog KODA’s battle against cancer. Michelle was scraping together funds by any means possible so that she could to help Koda by having surgery to remove as much cancer from his face as possible. Some of our readers answered her prayers and helped with what they could.

Today I received a heartbreaking email from Michelle with which I responded by sending all of our best wishes for her and our sincere condolences:

June 5, 2010

Friends of Koda,

Everyone on this email list has helped Koda by either donating towards his cancer treatment a little over a year ago or offering him prayers and support.

I'm very sad to say that tomorrow we have an appointment to bring Koda in and help him take his journey to a place where he will not have to suffer. He has been progressively slowing down and is now not interested in eating much, in fact as of today he can't hold anything down. Although he is still himself as usual and in good spirits, his time has been coming and I can't leave him suffering in the state he is in, not even be able to hold food down. I wish the day had not come, but it is now time for me to be a good friend and help Koda to move on towards his next destiny.

I write all of you because I am hoping as many people as possible can say a prayer or send good thoughts for Koda. I want to make sure he has support in moving on comfortably and that his spirit has help taking its journey.

Thank you to everyone who has supported Koda...he has lots of friends!!! The last year he spent since being diagnosed with cancer, was great one for him. We went on so many family trips, walks in the woods and he has been spoiled with all types of toys, bones and meats.

We recently moved to Mass. and Koda made the journey home with us across the country. Just last week he was walking around exploring Utah and eating steaks...so his disent to his current state now has happened quickly.

Tomorrow we are bringing him in at 2:45 eastern standard time so please send him your prayers. I attached some photos of Koda enjoying nature just last week.

Thank you,
Michelle

USWR 3rd Annual Camp-Out & Work-Weekend

USWR 3rd Annual Camp-Out & Work-Weekend - 2010On May 28th we literally drove thru rain, sleet, snow and MUD to get to the refuge for our 3rd Annual Camp-Out & Work-Weekend. Our turn-out this year was somewhat less than expected because of “Mother Nature” however things began to turn around on Saturday the 29th when the clouds cleared and the sun started drying things out.

With the help of volunteers John Cummings, Isabella ZiZi, Chris Mikulice, Tammy & Rick Boatwright, Shane Conover-Robertson, Linda Mosley and Shellie Robertson we were able to tackle some of the things on our to-do list. We planted SIXTEEN trees that were donated to the refuge by Moana Nursery in Sparks, built a second fence and safety gate down in the large enclosure to prevent any of our pack members from slipping past us when we open the gate, and we were able to disassemble a portion of Comanche’s kennel to put in new fill dirt and rebuild a wall panel that he had pretty much destroyed. Tyra was also the recipient of a few minor repairs to her space.

Volunteers Kati Lane & Michaela Davis paid us a short visit on Sunday although Kati was somewhat limited on what she could do….congratulations Kati on the upcoming arrival of our new little future “Wolf Pup” volunteer!

If weather cooperates we should be able to continue our efforts over the Labor Day Weekend in September. Thanks to all for a job well done!

Pack Member of the Month for July

Aries

Aries - US Wolf Refuge Pack MemberIt’s been two years this month since “Aries” joined our pack as an Ambassador Wolf-Dog. Aries (affectionately dubbed “Chunky-Monkey” by volunteer Chris Mikulice, referring to his “slight” weight gain this Winter) is now five years old and has been actively attending public events representing the refuge for a little over a year. His first public appearance was at the 2009 Stanford Powwow where he was the center of attraction drawing people far and near.

Aries is a wonderful animal that loves being in the spotlight getting all of the attention he can. His mesmerizing blue eyes won him the cover of the October/November 2009 issue of Petfolio Magazine which made us so proud we could barely contain ourselves.

Read Aries story on our website under “Our Resident Wolves”.

In The Spotlight

“Gratitude”

Every day we are grateful for our volunteers as well as other supporters who have been generous to us financially and in other ways. Something as simple as Sani-Hut in Sparks giving us a huge discount to rent one of their units or Rubbish Runners in Reno offering us a dumpster practically for free makes us really happy. Then there are the “not-so-simple” things; Moana Nursery in Sparks donated SIXTEEN expensive trees for us to plant around the refuge to enhance the property as well as give some of our pack members shade, ABF Freight System & Western Nevada Supply put forth a huge group effort by donating the transport of a very large supply of dog food that was donated to us by American Nutrition in Utah. All of these things, big or small, are appreciated by us more than you could ever know. Please know that whenever any of you go out of your way to help our pack, we are extremely grateful. Without you, we could not do what we do. Thank you.
