2011 Tax-Deductible Donations

We understand that in this difficult economy it is not easy to donate to organizations such as ours. Family most definitely comes first. However, if the opportunity arises, please think of us when making a Tax-Deductible donation this year. Our "pack" always appreciates the help from our supporters.

Happy Birthday TemerityLOOK WHO'S HAVING A BIRTHDAY!!!

"TEMERITY"

TemerityOur beloved Senior Ambassador; Bill Chamberlain's closest companion and our dearest friend TEMERITY is 15 years old this month. Temerity was born in January 1996 and although Temerity may choose to nap a little more often than before and most of the time can't hear a thing we are saying to her anymore, she is still in wonderful health. A recent check-up with our vet proved this when she passed everything with flying colors!

TemerityTemerity's story is on our website under "Our Resident Wolves", however it leaves a lot of stones unturned. An example of this is how this remarkable girl (never having pups of her own) stepped up to the plate in August 2007 to help raise "Athena" when she arrived at the refuge as a sickly pup that we feared would not survive. Also, how she now lays back as "Grandma" overseeing Athena (her adopted daughter) guiding and "raising" Arrow from puppy-hood to an adult. Watching this natural order of life just makes your heart swell with pride.

Read about Temerity's remarkable journey from Colorado to the U.S. Wolf Refuge (which was then located in Arizona) 14 years ago, as well as how she bonded with our refuge's first Ambassador "Pioneer" following in his paw prints to later represent the refuge on her own when he was no longer here. Words alone cannot begin to convey how we feel about our wonderful "T" and how much she means to us all. She is a gentle soul that will be sorely missed for a long, long time after she is no longer with us.

Happy Birthday "T" – we all love you!

More January birthday celebrations are: Tyra, 01/97 is now 14 years old & Aries, 01/05 is now 6 years old.

Happy New Year

Pack Member of the Month
& Pictures From BANDIT's Trip

As we reported in last months newsletter, after Bandit's trip to our friends at the Spay & Neuter Clinic in Auburn, CA., Bandit is now available for adoption. I thought that his doctor visit and surgery alone entitled BANDIT to be the "Pack Member of the Month" for January.

Bandit an the vets

Hopefully this New Year will be a brand new beginning for Bandit and maybe we'll even find a new home for this wonderful big baby. Thru no fault of his own, in Bandits short life of barely over one year, the U.S. Wolf Refuge is his third home. This wonderful animal deserves a new FOREVER home with new people who love him unconditionally and want to share their lives with him for the rest of HIS life! But, whatever the future holds for Bandit, we are here for him.

Feb. 2010

Shasta and MelindaAfter living at the refuge for 6 years, long time resident SHASTA was adopted by our volunteers Malinda & Dan Shepard. Malinda & Dan made the long drive all the way from "Gowly-faced" GibColorado to help at the 2009 Memorial Day Work-Weekend and Malinda just couldn't get Shasta out of her mind. She began the adoption process shortly thereafter and Bill Chamberlain delivered Shasta to his new home in Colorado himself.

Shortly after our celebration for Shasta began, we were devastated loosing "Old Growly Face" JEB. Jeb was a little over 10 years old and died peacefully of old age.

March 2010

Mira - Not a wolfdogThe adoption of Shasta and the loss of Jeb opened up two spots at the refuge so that we were able to help another couple of animals. In March, after many phone calls from Modesto Animal Control, we rescued our first "Not-a-Wolf-Dog" MIRA.

After the animal shelter kept insisting that they had a wolf-dog at their facility, volunteers Shellie & Chris made the drive to check on her. She was in no way even part wolf --- just a small white shepherd mix that weighed all of maybe 35 lbs BUT she was on their "kill list" so what's a person to do? We welcomed her with open arms and were able to eventually find her a new home!

April 2010

April was a big month for us. We were fortunate to have a large amount of dog food donated by American Nutrition but the problem was that it was in UTAH. Transportation from Utah to Nevada was graciously donated by ABF Freight Systems to the receiving dock at Western Nevada Supply in Sparks. Then they delivered it up to the refuge.

We are very lucky people!

May 2010

Stanford Pow Wow 2010Work Weekend May 2010May has become one of our very favorite months every year. This was the 3rd year that we attended the Stanford Powwow. We brought Aries, Kasa and Temerity along with us and set-up a double wide booth. Many of our volunteers showed up sporting their brand new bright red "Volunteer" shirts and we spent three days speaking to the public about wolves and wolf-dogs. We can't wait for the 2011 Powwow!!!

We were so fortunate to meet jewelry artist Elizabeth Lynn Moon at the Powwow, who was inspired to create a necklace set honoring KASA, which she later donated as a fundraising item for our pack.

The end of May was also our 3rd Annual Memorial Day Campout and Work-Weekend at the refuge. It's the perfect chance to get together with new friends and get a few chores done.

July 2010

Art Paws and Bark FestFor the 2nd year in a row we attended Petfolio Magazines Art Paws & Bark Fest in Reno, but this year was different. This year we were the WINNERS of Petfolio's Readers Choice Award.

Our supporters voted for us as their favorite local charity and it was yet another opportunity to set up our booths and introduce our ambassador animals to the public. We even entered ARIES in the costume contest as a "Wolf in Sheep's clothing" and he took first place at that as well. Michelle with Petfolio says that every time she thinks of him wearing that costume it makes her smile!

August 2010

Arrow / Arrow and AthenaLast August we welcomed ARROW to our pack. He was a rescue from Battle Mountain Nevada who instantly won the hearts of everyone he met, including ATHENA. Since TEMERITY is aging gracefully, we thought this was the perfect animal to keep as Athena's new companion and playmate. He is absolutely wonderful.

Ann SnowballIn August we also met two new friends that I'm sure we'll see time and time again. At the Wildlife Conservation Network Event in October 2009, volunteer Christine Mikulice met Ann Snowball. At that event Ann was helping raise money and awareness for Elephants but she also spoke to Chris about her fascination with wolves. Ann is an instructor that practices "T" Touch massage on animals. She came to our refuge to try the technique on our pack and to also teach a few of the staff how to do it. It was quite interesting!

After Ann had been there just a few short days we were honored to welcome another new friend. Merlin Van Lawick decided to spend part of his summer break visiting our refuge. Merlin is the grandson of our friend and mentor, Jane Goodall. Merlin had a wonderful time getting to know our pack and we had a great time getting to know him! He even pitched in and put up some fencing with Bill. Coming from Tanzania, I had the opportunity to make him his first ever bagel with cream cheese!

Merlin Van Lawick

Bandit formerly know as LoboAugust went out with a BANG as we welcomed BANDIT (then Lobo) to our pack. Bandit was a local rescue from Reno who's family lost their home. It was not easy squeezing this very large animal in, but we just couldn't turn our backs on him.

October 2010

October Booth at the Wildlife Conservation NetworkThis October we attended the Wildlife Conservation Networks event in San Francisco for the second year in a row. The first year we were guests of Jane Goodall, but this year we attended setting up our fundraising/education booth. We met a lot of really nice people, some of whom are going to make a point to visit the refuge. We are looking forward to participating again in 2011 when Jane will be there again.

TullyOctober also brought us new people that fell in love with our "not-a-wolf-dog" Mira. She was adopted and is living happily in the Reno area with her new family and doggie companion. Unfortunately as Mira went to her new home, Tully (who had been adopted a few months earlier) came back to us. Tully is a wonderful big boy, but his energy level isn't for everyone. He is highly adoptable and we have faith that someday we'll find someone who can't live without him, but until that day comes, we're enjoying his company again...actually Bandit is enjoying his company more than anyone. These two are equal in size and energy so they have become wonderful playmates.

December 2010

The weather has changed and it's cold-cold-cold now! The animals are patiently waiting for their favorite thing in the world, SNOW. There's been only a dusting here and there but that will no doubt change soon.

Landess Witmer of Petfolio Magazine with Bill Chamberlain, Aries, and TemerityDecember 5th was the day that we held the ticket drawing for the "Kasa's Clan" necklace set. Landess Witmer of Petfolio Magazine drew the winning ticket. The lucky winner was Sue Klemp, a Reno resident that had bought one ticket the very first day we began selling them at Petfolio's Art Paws & Bark Fest event.

In 2010 sales of our "Adopt-a-Wolf" packets and a few new items that we added to our "Gift Shop" generated a little more in donations than we brought in for 2009. Considering how everyone is struggling in this economy, we feel fortunate with that. Our e-newsletter mailing list is up to approximately 600 people. We look forward to whatever 2011 brings to us.
