2011 Tax-Deductible Donations
We understand that in this difficult economy it is not easy to donate to organizations such as ours. Family most definitely comes first. However, if the opportunity arises, please think of us when making a Tax-Deductible donation this year. Our "pack" always appreciates the help from our supporters.

What's Been Going on in Temerity's World?
When this newsletter comes out, Bill will have finally COMPLETED his radiation and chemotherapy treatments. Hurray!!!
This has been a very long journey and Bill has been more than a trooper. He's pretty run down and sick a lot of time. It will take some time for him to begin to feel better and for him to rebuild his strength. Although these treatments take care of the cancer….they're brutal on a person's body.
Bill's last treatment is July 1. We would ALL like to thank you for being there for him and for the refuge throughout this whole process. We/He couldn't have done it without you. This just goes to show you the reality of "The strength of the Wolf is in the Pack ~ the strength of the Pack is in the Wolf."
Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts
Our Sweet Tyra Has Left Us
It's so disheartening to have to let everyone know that another one of our Senior Pack Members has left us. After loosing 14-1/2 year old Stubby in April,
we knew that we would be facing the loss of other senior animals most likely in the near future, but loosing TYRA has been especially difficult. She was 14 years old this past January.
Tyra came to the U.S. Wolf Refuge in 1998 when it was still located in Arizona. She made the move in 2000 to Nevada along with Temerity and others.
Tyra was a very, very special girl. She caught the eye of an entertainer in 2003 and he adopted her and made her a part of his magic act. She was his companion for about five years but then in 2008 when he went thru some personal problems she came back to the refuge to live out the remainder of her life at "home" with all of us that love her so much.
Tyra was amazing in that although she was a senior, many days she acted like a youngster. Sadly we did start noticing changes in her over the past year with very little that we could do about them.
Tyra will be missed by everyone. Although we don't know for sure, I personally think that Comanche might miss seeing her and "talking" to her since she was his next-door neighbor for quite a long time.

Pack Member of the Month
Our Pack Member of the Month for July 2011 is ATHENA. Her positive energy has brought so much happiness to every person and animal she has ever met.
It's really hard to believe that ATHENA is now 4 years old. She came to the refuge as a sickly four-month old puppy who had literally escaped death by a few HOURS when she was rescued from an animal shelter in the Lake Shasta California area. Athena was mal-nourished and full of mange. Looking at her now with her extremely thick, fluffy, healthy coat it's hard to even begin to remember what she looked like when Bill took her in and started nursing her back to health.
Athena has given us all so many good memories, including those with first time "Mom" Temerity who (to our knowledge) had never had anything to do with a puppy before in her life! At first she reluctantly put-up with Athena but because of Athena's persistence she had no choice but to begin to love her as if she was her own off-spring.
Athena has also proven herself to be fearless, becoming Comanche's favorite playmate. Watching her wrestle and jump all over and around the large male wolf-dog (who is twice her size) is quite a site to see.
Athena is now bonded with Arrow. They are virtually inseparable and spend pretty much every moment of every day in each other's company.
Life just wouldn't be the same at the Refuge without Athena...
New Volunteers Visit the Refuge
Nancy and her youth group formerly volunteered in Oregon at Howling Acres Wolf Sanctuary. Unfortunately Howling Acres closed down so the group was looking for a new place to direct their energy. We are so happy to have met them at the Stanford Powwow last year and that they chose us!
A Personal Account of Their Visit by Nancy Brown
Snow in June?
Our first trip to volunteer at the U.S. Wolf Refuge nearly ended before it began when the refuge got 8 inches of snow the day before we were to arrive. We spent a day in Reno hoping the road would dry out and then Tammy (U.S. Wolf Volunteer Coordinator) volunteered to shuttle us in and out from where we left our rented van. We finally arrived, settled into the wonderful trailer, and the girls spent their first day playing with and caring for the wonderful animals that live there.
The rest of trip was spent working harder, completing the daily chores, trying to find a gate latch that Tully could not open, and then hanging chain link fence with Bill. The girls are proud to have learned how to hang chain link fence and to have contributed to the larger enclosure for the house animals (Temerity, Athena & Arrow) and Bandit and Tully's new play yard. Each girl felt honored to have made a difference and they loved the trip. Madison said her favorite memory was watching Tully stand up on his back paws, plant his front paws on Rebecca's shoulders and lean down to lick her head! My (Nancy, mom) favorite memory was serving hot chocolate in bed to the weary volunteers. Six days later we drove out, making plans for next year!
