2011 Tax-Deductible Donations

We understand that in this difficult economy it is not easy to donate to organizations such as ours. Family most definitely comes first. However, if the opportunity arises, please think of us when making a Tax-Deductible donation this year. Our "pack" always appreciates the help from our supporters.

What's Been Going on in Temerity's World?

Dad (Bill) is finished with his extended hospital stays for week long Chemotherapy treatments (yea!!!!) and everything is looking very good. A few days after returning from the Stanford Powwow (which was pretty difficult on him, but he is a trooper) he began DAILY low-dose radiation treatments which will go on thru the first part of July. Every Wednesday they are also giving him a Chemo shot but it's nothing like he had to endure before. If all goes as well as we expect it to go, he will be well enough hopefully by the end of July to return to work. That's still a little ways to go, but he is still only receiving $200.00 per month in food stamps so as usual we are asking that if anyone is able to make a tax-deductible donation to the refuge it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you ALL for trying to help us get thru this difficult time.

A Very Sad Farewell

"The Last Wolf Now Howls Alone"

April 22nd, 2011 was a tragic day at the U.S. Wolf Refuge we lost one of the two remaining pure wolves at our sanctuary in Nevada. Stubby was over 14 years old, and his many years finally caught up with him.. He came to the refuge in May 1997 as a young wolf pup from a place called Ligertown in Idaho, when the refuge was still located in Arizona. He was accompanied by his two siblings Curly and Floppy. When Bill relocated the refuge to Nevada, Stubby along with his two brothers, as well as Tyra and Temerity made the trip with him.

StubbyEach of these three brothers was unique in their own way. Stubby was the Alpha of his group, named for his short stubby tail; Floppy for his one ear which for the longest time "flopped" over and would not stand straight up and then Curly with has one ear curled under. Curly had definitely become the Omega as he aged and began to have issues with his eyesight.

Friday morning we found Stubby trying to walk around his kennel with very wobbly legs and then he was down and couldn't get up. We very quickly transported him to our vet in Reno where after she examined him, he was humanely euthanized with his "family" around him comforting him. Bill, Shellie, Chris, Tammy, Donna and Bill's sister Grace Ann all whispered loving good-bye's to him as he very quickly crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. We're all positive that Floppy (his brother that passed away a few years ago) was anxiously waiting for him on the other side.

Stubby's brother Curly now howls alone in his kennel. Although the other wolf-dogs join in, he is the last pure wolf here. His sorrowful sounds let us know he is experiencing the same pain as us. But like us, only time will heal the loss of Stubby. Farewell my friend.

In the work that we do, chances are that another pure wolf will come our way at some point, joining our pack of high and low content wolf-dogs, but Curly might not live long enough to see that day or to greet that animal as only he could ever do, WOLF to WOLF.

Once Again, the PowWow is Behind Us

2011 Stanford PowWow
The Stanford Powwow is behind us for another year. Bill, Chris, Tammy and Shellie had the much needed help of new volunteer Lorna Corkery for all three days. Lorna made the trek from the Reno area with Bill and Tammy and was a wonderful asset. We couldn't have done it without her. I hope we can talk her into helping again next year.

Volunteer John Cummings came all the way from Richmond CA. down to Palo Alto on Friday afternoon with the sole intention of doing nothing but helping us set up our two canopies and grid walls. He knew that Bill was not going to be able Lorna & Kasato help us. It was incredibly generous of him, and appreciated more than he will ever know. THANK YOU AGAIN JOHNNY!!! John's family, his wife Courtney, Madeline and Kendalldaughters Zolina & Isabella, niece Malina, as well as family friend Ricardo all stopped by Saturday and Sunday to see how we were doing. They are ALL volunteers at the refuge. Isabella participates in the Dance competitions.

Saturday was the longest day for us from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. We were joined by volunteer and friend Ann Snowball from San Francisco who brought along her friend (& I think future U.S. Wolf volunteer) Karen Kelly-Givens. We were all so grateful Ann and Ariesfor the extra help and we couldn't have done it without them! Everyone jumped right in and gave 110% to give Aries and Kasa the attention they needed while manning the Gift Shop and answering questions from the public. Shellie's husband Dean, step-son Shane (who volunteers at the refuge), daughter Shannon with Shellie's grandchildren even showed up and the little ones (Kendall 6 & Madeline 7) wore their bright red U.S. Wolf Refuge "Future Volunteer" shirts and spent some time passing out refuge information cards to the crowd before moving on to enjoy the dancing and vendors.

Considering the economy I think we did quite well for our pack. Our Gift Shop was a hit and of course nobody could take their eyes off of our Ambassador animals.

We had friends from previous years seeking us out to show us their support and to visit with Kasa and Aries. Some of the visitors told us that WE are the only reason they visit the Powwow! Because of this we will definitely participate again next year with a few minor adjustments…we thought we would like being close to the dancing arena, NOT a good idea. It was extremely loud, so next year we will (as weird as it sounds) insist on being as far away from the dancing/drumming arena as we can get!

Donna Carlton and TemerityOur good friend and volunteer Donna Carlton shared her company newsletter with us all. She was so proud of the fact (as she should be) that her fellow workers appreciated her love of our pack and herwork with the refuge. Donna deserves all of this recognition plus more!

Pets of the month! This is awesome!

Just one more example of the giving hearts of DWTers. The person who submitted this photo volunteers at the US Wolf Refuge in Reno, Nevada. This is a picture of Aries and Kasa, a couple of wolf-dogs that she "unofficially" adopted last year. Their owners could no longer take care of them, so they came to live at the Wolf Refuge. "They are both such loving animals, and I love hanging out with them." Can you guess who this kind person is? Winner gets a $5 Cafe card!
