2011 Tax-Deductible Donations
We understand that in this difficult economy it is not easy to donate to organizations such as ours. Family most definitely comes first. However, if the opportunity arises, please think of us when making a Tax-Deductible donation this year. Our "pack" always appreciates the help from our supporters.

What's Been Going on in Temerity's World?
All is good on the home front. Destiny is keeping Arrow, Athena, Temerity AND Bill on their toes and wearing them all out….boy what a bundle of energy that pup has! Bill is feeling better and better each day and our "old gal" Temerity has been doing pretty well too. Her 16th birthday is approaching us quickly. We'll have to plan something REALLY special.
A Big OWHOOOO Welcome to Takoda
The whole pack welcomes "Takoda" to the refuge. Takoda (who was named Wolfie by local children near his former home) comes to us from the Klammath River Valley region of Northern California. His former owner had the typical problems associated with these wonderful animals – he couldn't contain him at home. After constant complaints and then horrible threats from one of his neighbors, Takoda's owner contacted us asking that we please take Takoda for his own safety.
This big boy weighs in at about 92 lbs right now but once his heart worm treatments have done their job we anticipate him putting on quite a few more pounds.
WE ARE CURRENTLY ACCEPTING DONATIONS TOWARDS Takoda'S NEUTER AS WELL AS HIS CONTINUED HEART WORM TREATMENTS.
Our vet is optimistic that he will pull thru just fine.
Takoda is very affectionate towards all humans and so far he has exhibited no aggression towards any of his new pack members. We are evaluating him to hopefully match him up with the perfect companion for him to room with.
10th Annual Wildlife Conservation Expo
On October 1st, for the 3rd year in a row (and 2nd year setting up our booth) the U.S. Wolf Refuge staff attended the WCN Expo in San Francisco.
This event hosts a multitude of rescue organizations from all over the world. There were people there saving anything from African Elephants to the California Coyote.
Staff and volunteers from the San Francisco Zoo were there once again and were telling us that they are building a new WOLF EXHIBIT at the zoo which we will definitely make a point of seeing. We were greeted by some of the people that we met last year as well as introducing ourselves to new friends.
Once again this year our friend Dr. Jane Goodall was the keynote speaker. Other speakers included elephant expert Dr. Iain Douglas-Hamilton, Saiga hero Elena Bykova, and Cheetah crusader Rebecca Klein. We had the opportunity for a private visit with Jane and her staff after the event, something that we will all treasure for the rest of our lives.
Here Kitty-Kitty ...
Some of the U.S. Wolf Refuge staff and volunteers wear more than one hat. Chris Mikulice also volunteers with another rescue organization near her California home H.A.L.O. HALO stands for the East Contra Costa HOMELESS ANIMALS LIFELINE ORGANIZATION. Shellie Robertson is also becoming more involved with this organization as well as volunteering for her local animal shelter.
Another HALO volunteer, Cindi Ott-Bales and her family have visited the refuge at one of our work weekends and Cindi actually helped micro-chip all of our pack members. Many others have expressed interest in coming to meet our pack. HALO'S dog manager Joyce Sanderson has referred wolf-dog owners to us for help. She is the one responsible for us being able to help Mariah a short time ago.
Partnering with this organization on more than one occasion, a trip was planned to Reno last week to pick-up ten new cat cages for HALO's new home in Oakley California, "HALO HOUSE". Verlene Leonardo (who also just happens to be Shellie's aunt), HALO's former President and the CAT MANAGER was eager to make the trip and to have the opportunity to visit and spend the night at the refuge. As you can see, she had the chance to get up close and personal with Takoda among many of the others. In the photo on the right, Comanche is behind Verlene and Takoda, biting at his kennel trying to join in the fun! These big guys climbing in Verlene's lap are ALOT different than the little tiny "bottle feeder" kittens that she is used to holding and carrying for!!! I thought I heard her say that she'll be back for another visit...

Pack Member of the Month
"Tully"
TULLY is not only one of our LARGEST males, he is one of everyone's FAVORITES! Tully LOVES interacting with people and will take as much attention from you as you are willing to give. Tully likes to play and wrestle, A LOT! He also loves to play with other large wolf-dogs like himself…especially Bandit. They are equal in size and energy and have become the best of friends! When they run thru the compound playing it literally sounds like a herd of horses.
Tully used to live on a ranch near Bakersfield, CA. with a retired couple. The wife unfortunately died and the husband decided to sell their ranch.
Tully has lived at the U.S. Wolf Refuge for about three years. He was adopted once but unfortunately returned to us because the woman was allergic to him…we think he was just too big and strong for the people to handle. He is at home with us and very happy where he is. We all really enjoy every minute we spend with Tully, so if another adoption never happens, it's ok with us!
