2010 Tax-Deductible Donations
We understand that in this difficult economy it is not easy to donate to organizations such as ours. Family most definitely comes first. However, if the opportunity arises, please think of us when making a Tax-Deductible donation this year. Our "pack" always appreciates the help from our supporters.

In The Spotlight
The refuge was honored to host two wonderful guests the first weekend in August.
Anne Snowball with "The Waltz Within" is a certified Tellington T-Touch Practitioner and Craniosacral Therapist. www.ttouch.com She had never tried her T-Touch methods on wolves/wolf-dogs and was very anxious to meet our pack. T-Touch is an approach that is usually very calming to animals with special needs such as social issues with either people or other animals.
She worked with our staff to try to teach us some of the basics and we were able to see significant differences primarily in Shadow and Nala, both of which are extremely people shy. Our staff person Chris Mikulice has been working with Shadow for quite some time. We believe that her efforts in addition to Anne's may have made a significant breakthrough for Shadow. With a lot of patience and time, by the
end of the weekend several people were able to touch, pet and carefully walk Shadow on a lead around the main enclosure. One of those people was our second guest Merlin Van Lawick. Merlin is the 17 year old grandson of our mentor Jane Goodall. We were so honored that he chose to spend part of his school vacation at our refuge while traveling the United States. We thoroughly enjoyed meeting him and his company. Merlin was drawn to Shadow as well. Ambassador animals Aries and Kasa enjoyed meeting their new friend as well.
Pack Member of the Month for September
Cherokee
Cherokee has been with us at the refuge since August 2007. He came to us from Pahrump Nevada with his kennel mate Shiloh as well as another male that we named Apache. .
At this point in Cherokee's life he is un-adoptable without Shiloh and most likely is destined to live with us for the rest of his life. It would take a very special, patient person to adopt an animal that is so people shy that he is unapproachable. (Please keep in mind that this is typical wolf behavior) Cherokee is most definitely an Omega, the lowest member of his pack. Shiloh is his Alpha and in his mind is his protector as well as the "boss" of whatever Cherokee does. This is Nature and this is the order of the pack. There is little that can be done to change it.
Cherokee caught Anne Snowball's interest the minute she saw him. She was determined to help him break out of his shell. He wants no interaction with us humans at all and panics if he is away from Shiloh. If I know Anne, she'll be back soon, determined to break thru to this boy.
Read more about Cherokee in the “Our Resident Wolves” section of this website.
Meet "Lobo"

Believe it or not, this big MOOSE is "LOBO" the newest addition to our pack. LOBO comes to us from a broken hearted family in the Reno area that had no choice but to find him a new home. He is another victim of foreclosure. This big boy is only ELEVEN months old and the refuge is his third home by no fault of his. He has just been the victim of circumstances. We are confident that with his easy going, friendly personality, we will easily place him with a new family.
As you know we always believe that a brand new life deserves a fresh start with a new name. Lobo is a very common name for an animal of this breed and he is far from the common boy. We'll let you know what that new name will be.
